Facilitation: when the group builds the answer
A facilitator owns the process, not the content. Here is what facilitation is, when it works, which methods exist — and why we use LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® when the subject is hard to say out loud.

What facilitation is — and is not
Facilitation comes from the Latin facilis: to make easier. A facilitator makes it easier for a group to think together. The facilitator owns the frame — the questions, the sequence, the pace, the airtime and the decision rule — but stays neutral on the answer the group lands on.
It sounds simple, but it is the difference between a meeting where three people talk 80% of the time and a meeting where the whole room's knowledge reaches the table. Ownership cannot be presented — it has to be built.
Four facilitation methods and when they fit
Classic workshop facilitation
Post-its, whiteboard and group work. Effective for bounded, concrete tasks — but the most verbal participants usually set the agenda.
Design thinking
Diverge, converge, prototype. Strong for product and service development where the user is central and fast tests are possible.
Liberating Structures
Small, tight microstructures (1-2-4-All, Troika) that distribute airtime. Good for large groups and short slots.
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®
Everyone builds an answer with their hands before anyone speaks. Best when the topic is complex, sensitive or shaped by uneven power.
The five pitfalls we see most often
1. Unclear purpose. If nobody can answer “what should we be able to do afterwards that we cannot do now”, the day becomes a conversation without a result.
2. The boss speaks first. After the first 60 seconds the room's answer space is defined. Let everyone formulate their answer before anyone shares it.
3. Too much content, too little process. Four presentations and 20 minutes of dialogue is a conference, not a workshop.
4. No decision rule. Agree up front whether it is consensus, consultation or the leader's call. Otherwise the day ends in ambiguity.
5. No follow-up. Without an owner, a deadline and a check-in after 30 days the energy drains away. We build the follow-up into the delivery itself.
How we facilitate
Before
Interviews with key people, a sharp purpose, a designed agenda and one building question per phase.
During
Everyone builds, everyone speaks. The models become the room's shared memory, and disagreements become visible instead of implied.
After
A visual report with models, quotes, themes and a 90-day action plan with an owner and a deadline.
Frequently asked questions about facilitation
What is facilitation?+
Facilitation means designing and leading a process so that a group arrives at a result on its own. The facilitator is neutral on content and accountable for the process: which questions get asked, in what order, who gets heard, and how the group moves from talk to decision. Unlike a trainer, the facilitator does not supply the answer; unlike a chair, the facilitator has no stake in the outcome.
How is facilitation different from training and consulting?+
A trainer has the answer and teaches it. A consultant analyses and recommends. A facilitator builds the frame so the group's own knowledge becomes visible and usable. In practice the roles blend, but it is worth knowing what you are buying: advice gives you a report, facilitation gives you ownership.
When does it make sense to bring in an external facilitator?+
When the topic matters enough that the leader should take part in the content rather than steer the process; when disagreement or power differences keep people from saying what they think; or when you have tried to talk your way to an answer several times without landing it.
What is a good facilitator's most important tool?+
The question. A strong building or dialogue question is open, concrete and personally relevant. Structure comes next: alternating individual reflection, pair sharing and joint decision is what stops the three loudest voices from owning the day.
What does professional facilitation cost?+
It depends on duration, group size, preparation and follow-up. We always give a fixed written proposal before we start — usually within two working days of your enquiry.
Shall we facilitate your next meeting?
Tell us briefly what you need to achieve, how many you are and when. We come back within two working days with a proposal for format and price.
